Abstract:
Two characteristics of good ideas are novel and counter-intuitive. Given a novel research idea, whether from yourself or someone else, we can investigate it in a simple setting first and then extend the investigation to more realistic and complex settings. Given a counter-intuitive idea and result, we can identify its essence and find when such an idea may hold true under new and different contexts. Therefore, it is an essential skill as well as a challenge to be able to generate those novel and counter-intuitive ideas, either directly or rather indirectly. In this talk, I will rely on my own research studies and some series of research papers from some other scholars in the fields such as Accounting, Economics, and Marketing. I will use them as examples to discuss how to generate novel and counter-intuitive research ideas.
