Abstract:
We empirically identify carry trade activities under the disguise of bitcoin transactions on US dollar and Renminbi bitcoin platforms during the post global financial crisis period. Relying on variations on platform prices and three policy shocks, we find the evidence of inflow capital control evasion. Using each exchange pair’s RMB to USD price as a proxy for capital inflow volume, we show that the capital inflow volumes of those with high currency conversion profit respond significantly more positively to carry trade returns. Moreover, this relationship becomes significantly weaker during China’s crackdowns on illicit capital flows through bitcoin transactions.
